Franz Kafka's story "The Metamorphosis" centers on Gregor Samsa, the protagonist, who awakens to find himself changed into a massive insect. After losing his job, Gregor is shut up in a room by his family. As Gregor's isolation from the outside world deepens, his death comes as a relief to his family, who had grown weary of him.
The protagonist in the novel is gradually pushed away from those near to him, symbolizing the cruel process of rejection by a wealthy and uncaring society of "others" who battle their own suffering.
